The Frontier Homestead State Park is teaming up with other organizations in Cedar City for a new program called Wonder Wednesdays. This new program is held in conjunction with early-out Wednesdays for elementary schools in the Iron County School District. Children accompanied by an adult can drop by anytime between 2-4 p.m. for make-n-take activities or self-guided programming at any of the following organizations: Frontier Homestead State Park (first Wednesday), the Cedar City Library (second Wednesday), Southern Utah Museum of Art (third Wednesday), and the Frehner Museum of Natural History (fourth Wednesday). These programs are free for Iron County elementary students. Here is our schedule:

 Wednesday, January 9th
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Our theme for today’s Wonder Wednesday event is:
Before Computers!

We will be focusing on early forms of communication and doing activities such as: rock art, block rubbing, story telling, and writing with ink and quills!

Wednesday, February 6th
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Our theme for today’s Wonder Wednesday event is:
Trail Ready!

Today our “pioneers” will be preparing to make their long journey west as they decipher trail markers, set up Civil War era tents, and decide what supplies to load in their wagons before finally setting out on the trail.

Wednesday, March 6th
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Our theme for today’s Wonder Wednesday event is:
Sheep to Shawl!

Today we will learn about wool, from the sheep that grows it, to the way it’s spun, to the clothes on your back. In partnership with the Sagebrush Fiber Artisans the Frontier Homestead State Park will guide participants on a journey through the step-by-step process of getting wool from the sheep to you!

Wednesday, April 3rd
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Our theme for today’s Wonder Wednesday event is:
Pioneer Gardening!

We will be exploring the many challenges of planting crops on the frontier. Preparing the soil, planting the seeds, and getting water to the plants, think you have what it takes to be a frontier gardener?

Wednesday, May 1st
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Our theme for today’s Wonder Wednesday event is:
Digging up the Past!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an archaeologist? Well today is a Wonder Wednesday event you won’t want to miss! In support of Archaeology and Preservation Month in Utah we will be providing a variety of Native American crafts, games, and skill projects. Test your hunting skills with an atl-atl, learn fun new games, and explore the history of those who lived in the Iron County area before us!

On Wonder Wednesdays, there is sure to be something to make you think, smile, or laugh so come join us. Spend some time learning about your family by playing with your family. For more information about Wonder Wednesdays and to see a calendar of the month’s activities, click here.
