Frontier Homestead is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibit in our new Rolling Gallery, “Divas and Dames” by digital artist Kaitlin Mills. Ever since she was young, she has loved to illustrate her favorite heroines from literature. She started doodling them in the margins with pencil and later migrated to ink and paint. At age 13, she began using digital tools and now paints exclusively in Photoshop with a Wacom pen tablet. The images are then printed with pigment ink on archival paper or canvas and some are embellished with gold leaf.
Mills says, “Shakespeare has always been a part of my life. (My parents even named me after the feisty Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew!) I am captivated by the diversity of Shakespeare’s heroines, and it seemed natural to me to portray Shakespeare’s women as I see them in my mind. For this series I was inspired by such diverse styles as art nouveau illustrator Alphonse Mucha and mid-century pinup artist Gil Elvgren, spun with my own brightly colored, vintage aesthetic. I like to think that each character I bring to life portrays a different aspect of who I am as a woman. “
With her mother working as an artist, Kaitlin has been constantly surrounded by art throughout her life. Kaitlin’s artistic expression takes many forms, including performance and visual art. Bold, striking colors and bright, playful content are prominent elements used by Kaitlin to portray women enjoying life! An opening reception will be held on Sunday, June 9th from 2-4pm at Frontier Homestead State Park.
